Our

Goals

Education at HOPE is given with the object of holistic development of the Special child.A child’s physical development for an independent living, mental development for learning general and social skills and intellectual development of her/his innate ability and potential to prepare him to live a meaningful life with dignity in the mainstream society.

Vocational training is given to everyone among all the adult girls and boys above 18 years of age. The field of training is chosen at the pre vocational stage itself considering her/his interest and aptitude and physical and mental ability. At present we are giving training in the following vocational areas. 1.Handloom. 2. Candle making 3. Soft toy making 4.Tailoring 5.Retailing 6. Gardening and Horticultural activities 7.Delivery of Therapeutic services 8. Office jobs related to bank, post-office and other organizations. Our aim is to develop improved training methods and enlarging the areas of vocational training and empower the differently able persons towards successful rehabilitation.

All the adults are given orientation training on Socialization, Interpersonal Relationships, and Social Activities with a view to prepare them for gainful employment in factories/workshops/offices and establishments. We have achieved significant success in our efforts to get the trainee adults employed/self-employed. Our goal is to achieve greater success in this area.

As the Special Children living in rural areas generally do not have access to Special Education, Training Therapeutic Services, HOPE has taken a programs to extend these services to the rural Community through Extension Service Centers. To begin with, HOPE is opening two Extension Centres in the rural areas on the Eastern and Western side of Durgapur. We hope to extend these services further in future.

HOPE Society, the Education and Therapists work in close association with parents of the Special Children. One third of the executive body members and staff are either from among the parents or siblings of the special children. The parents organization, Parents of HOPE is actively involved in all matters related to education, training and welfare of the special children. HOPE aspires to strengthen such efforts through counselling of parents and creating awareness among parents about preventive measures against onset of disability.

Without creating social awareness, integration of the differently able cannot be achieved. HOPE is pursuing its goal of creating social awareness through Rallies, Workshops, Seminars and various social and cultural programmes. The areas of interaction have been enlarged in the society through sale of products of HOPE’s vocational units, greeting cards and paintings of HOPE’s students. Also visits of social activists, Eminent Citizens, Head of Institutions / Organizations are organized on a regular basis. Our goal is to create awareness in the society such that the acceptance of the differently able persons as they are, becomes a reality.

There are basically two types of barriers a) Visible (physical) barriers for access to most of the public places. Schools, Rly. Stations, Post Office, Banks etc and, b) Non visible (ethical) barriers such as non-acceptance of the persons in the society due to ignorance, Prejudice and wrong attitude of the people at large. Both these barriers are creating hindrances for all round development of differently able persons. Our goal is to bring about a change in the attitude of individuals, Establishments, Govt. Depts. And especially in the society as a whole to create a barrier free environment for the differently able persons.

In our country, we have made very significant progress in the area of inclusive Education. HOPE has taken up a programme in association with some of the schools of normal children in our area. Simultaneously, HOPE has started nursery level classes in its two schools with an approach towards inclusive education and to set up a model inclusive education school in future. Our goal is to make inclusive education a reality.
